We are thrilled that Hunt Electric has won several awards this spring in recognition of our exceptional safety rating, with an EMR of .74, significantly outperforming the industry average and reflecting Hunt Electric’s strong commitment to safety.
We were recently awarded the Associated General Contractors of Utah’s highest safety award of 2026, the Diamond Award with 5 Stars. This award takes into consideration a company’s safety record (including total recordable incidents and lost time injuries) as well as the quality of leading indicators such as training and proactive risk management.
Additionally, this year we earned a certificate of recognition from AGC of America. In Colorado, we earned the WHITE Safety Level in the Construction Health and Safety Excellence (CHASE) program through AGC’s Colorado chapter in partnership with OSHA.
This level of workplace safety didn’t happen overnight. It’s a reflection of a deep-rooted safety culture that Hunt Electric has built over 40 years in business. Here are three lessons learned about how to build a true safety culture that goes beyond compliance:
Start on Day 1
At Hunt Electric, safety is a core part of New Hire Orientation. It’s not just about checking off a box that new employees have been informed of our ladder policy. It’s an opportunity to introduce them to our safety culture by emphasizing expectations that no one cuts corners on safety to get a job done faster, and every team member has the shared obligation to “see something, say something” and stop unsafe work.
Refocus Daily
At the beginning of every day on every jobsite, each member of the crew is required to fill out a F.O.C.U.S. form that asks them to identify hazards and take a proactive approach to safety. Taking time to answer questions such as “Are there trades working overhead and a potential of falling tools or materials?” increases awareness of potential danger and gives team members an opportunity to mitigate hazards before beginning work.
Monday morning toolbox talks and a brief midweek safety call on Wednesdays help further refocus teams throughout the week.
Train Well and Often
Hunt Electric carefully tracks what training team members have received and makes it easy for them to receive further training through the company. This includes official certification courses (forklift, defensive driving, arc flash, lockout tagout, etc.) and video refreshers on topics such as rigging safety that employees can access online anytime.
The Results
Hunt Electric’s safety efforts across all eight divisions and five branches of the company continue to be recognized. In addition to the Diamond Safety Award with 5 Stars for 2026, the company brought home three other safety-related awards in the past year and beat the industry average with a .74 EMR in 2025. However, no award will ever be as important as the real reason we make safety a top priority: To get everyone home safe to their families at the end of every day.
